Infraplus Consulting was appointed by Millennium to design and plan a Greenfield FTTx network for the US client. The project spanned 128 km of fiber and was intended to connect 20,500 premises across various towns in the USA. This Greenfield project started with address verification and pole mapping, followed by the design of underground and aerial fiber routes according to the feasibility of the area.

The design focused on key components of the fiber network, including fiber terminals (FOSC), fiber tail connections, and integration of fiber splice cases. The network design also involved careful planning of feeder routes, distribution routes, and drop cable installation.

Infraplus utilized GIS software to convert Service Address files (.gdb format) into Shapefiles and organized the data into various layers like fiber terminal placement, branch splice, and fiber cable installation. The design also specified conduit placement, handholes, and manholes for optimal fiber installation and connectivity.

Scope of Work:

1. Fiber Network Design:

Feeder and distribution route design for optimal network connectivity
Verification of addresses and pole locations for precise network planning
Design of underground and aerial network routes to ensure reliable service
Fiber terminal (FOSC) and fiber tail connections for efficient data transmission

2. GIS Data Management & Mapping:

Convert Service Address files (.gdb) into Shapefiles for easier manipulation and mapping
Develop multiple design layers for network components such as fiber splice cases, slack loops, and fiber drop cables
Ensure accurate field signage placement and fiber cable alignment

3. Network Infrastructure:

Conduit placement of different sizes, as required for the network's capacity
Installation of handholes, manholes, and flowerpots to house fiber cables and ensure network integrity
Design fiber routes and equipment placement for fiber drop cables, ensuring efficient home/office connectivity

4. Design and Implementation:

Plan fiber terminal locations, splices, and fiber cable types (24Ct, 48Ct, 72Ct, 96Ct, etc.)
Feeder route and distribution route planning to support large-scale network installation
Drop cable installation to provide high-speed broadband connections to end-users

Deliverables:

Complete network design in QGIS with all fiber network components mapped and aligned
Bill of Quantities (BoQ) in Excel, detailing materials, installation, and cost estimates
Final design documentation, including fiber network layout and connection schemes for the full network infrastructure
